Mrs. Merkel called on Merz and German politicians to exercise restraint in their statements on the migration issue

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticizes current head of government Friedrich Merz for his harsh statements on migration policy, report is related to the publication Bild.

At a public reading of her memoirs in Bonn, Merkel said that the events of 2015–2016 should not be called a “migrant flow” and emphasized the importance of seeing the fate of the real people behind such a situation.

According to the former prime minister, politicians must be conscientious and restrained when discussing the topic of migration.

“The vast majority of people clearly understand whether a politician is acting according to some kind of calculation or whether he is really interested in solving the problem,” the former prime minister noted.

Merkel added that “restraint and moderation” are essential for democratic parties.

Friedrich Merz previously said Germany had made “a lot of progress” in addressing migration issues, but noted that “the problem still exists in the appearance of cities.” He refused to answer questions about details, turning to his daughters for a “clear and concise” explanation, which sparked a wave of criticism and accusations of racism.

However, a poll conducted by the Wahlen group for ZDF between October 21 and 23 showed that 63% of Germans agreed with Merz's position. However, younger people under 35 support it less – only 42% compared to 66% of the older generation over 60 years old.

Formerly Angela Merkel admitthat the “open door” policy has contributed to strengthening the AfD party.
