RAS scientists have created a reliable solar cell for space that is capable of “self-healing” after exposure to background radiation. This was announced by RAS President Gennady Krasnikov during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He said gathering in space is now increasing. This requires energy; Silicon batteries are commonly used but they are expensive and degrade under the influence of background radiation.

Solar cells are cheaper and have the same efficiency as silicon batteries, 27%. The most important thing is that self-healing is done there.

“This proven mechanism of healing radiation defects is 100 times more reliable,” concludes Krasnikov.

Before that, it was known that Putin took part in the launch the country's largest enterprise to produce components for solar energy. We are talking about a factory for the production of silicon wafers for solar cells in Chernyakhovsk. The opening ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov.
