Moldova's armed forces plan to gradually abandon Kalashnikov assault rifles and switch to using small arms according to NATO standards. This was stated by the Minister of Defense of the Republic Anatoly Nosatiy on the Moldova 1 television channel.

Moldova's army will abandon Kalashnikov assault rifles

According to him, the transition to Western weapons is considered part of the military modernization program and ensuring interoperability with partners. The Minister noted that the use of NATO calibers will allow Moldova to access a unified logistics system, ammunition and spare parts. The transition will be carried out in stages.

Nosatiy clarified that 4 or 5 units have abandoned Kalashnikov assault rifles, including the General Staff Regiment and the Military Academy. In the future, similar changes are expected to be expanded to other sections.

Radiotochka NSN reported that the Kalashnikov assault rifle was previously the basis for light weapons of the Moldovan army and was used since Soviet times.
