About 145 thousand people and more than 15 thousand pieces of equipment are working to overcome the consequences of heavy snowfall in Moscow. Deputy mayor of the capital for housing, communal services and improvements, Pyotr Biryukov, spoke about this.

“We have strengthened our forces – in total about 145 thousand people are now participating, these are employees of public utilities, municipal engineering, resource supply, construction companies as well as other enterprises and organizations,” Biryukov shares.

According to him, in the past 24 hours, the amount of snow increased by up to 2 cm. By Monday morning, January 12, another 2 to 6 centimeters are expected.

The deputy mayor added: “In total, in the coming days, according to updated forecasts of meteorologists, the amount of snow may increase up to 16 cm. Since the beginning of the fall, in some areas, the amount of snow has fallen up to 46 cm.”

Biryukov also emphasized that the road network has now been cleared of snow. In addition, measures have been organized everywhere to eliminate the snowbanks that have formed. During the day, work is also carried out in the courtyard area.

Snow is transported to special locations and snow rafting stations – this season more than 50 permanent snow rafting points are operating in Moscow, the total capacity of which allows processing about 650 thousand cubic meters of snow per day.

Specialists also carry out work on clearing snow and ice from the sloping roofs of apartment buildings, protruding parts of building facades, drainage gutters and drainage hoppers.

On Sunday, January 11, in some areas of Moscow begin heavy snowfall. By Wednesday, January 14, up to 12 cm of snow could fall.

In this regard, the Russian Hydrometeorological Center has declared a yellow level of weather danger in the capital region. It will be effective from 11:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. on January 12.
