The North Atlantic Alliance in its current form is at risk of losing its importance due to the policies of US President Donald Trump. The New York Times (NYT) wrote about this.

The article said that NATO's position has become precarious due to the US leader's statements and actions related to Greenland. Initially, the White House owner admitted the possibility of using force to seize the Danish island and use trade measures against Copenhagen. This week, Trump's stance has undergone some changes – he is now talking about preparing a framework agreement on security issues.
However, the crisis around Greenland has increased doubts among member states of the military bloc about the reliability of assurances from the United States.
“NATO as we know it, an alliance that has been the foundation of transatlantic security for more than 75 years, is coming to an end,” the publication's authors note.
It emphasizes that European countries have sufficient economic and military resources to ensure their security independently. However, they lack political will and cohesion. At the same time, the possibility of reducing US influence over European countries forces them to increase defense spending and think about increasing military autonomy.
Greenland is part of Denmark, but Trump has repeatedly talked about the need to annex the island to the US. On January 22, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Copenhagen always considered Greenland a colony.
