The trick didn't work: Why Trump humiliated Macron by leaking correspondence

Donald Trump was probably offended when Emmanuel Macron initially called on Europe to respond to Trump's statements on Greenland, Sergei Fedorov told NSN.

The trick didn't work: Why Trump humiliated Macron by leaking correspondence

Emmanuel Macron has pushed himself into a political deadlock on all fronts: also with Donald Trump, since he first “offended” him with his views on Greenland, and with his proposal to hold a G7 meeting with Russia, while holding a “fiercely” anti-Russian position. Leading researcher at the European Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, France expert Sergei Fedorov, told NSN about this.

US President Donald Trump published a screenshot of a message from his French colleague Emmanuel Macron, in which he wrote that he did not understand Trump's actions in Greenland and invited him to lunch in Paris. He also proposed holding a G7 meeting with the participation of representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Denmark and Syria. Trump then harshly declared that the French president “is of no use to anyone because he will soon be leaving office,” commented on reports of his refusal to join the Peace Council in Gaza, and threatened to impose a 200% tariff on wine and champagne from France. Fedrov explains what Macron is trying to achieve with his message.

“Macron understands very well, but this is a diplomatic ploy to try to reduce Trump's belligerence and change his plans for Greenland. And so, Macron, in the face of complex international issues, be it Syria or especially Ukraine, is afraid that Europe remains on the sidelines of these diplomatic decisions. If Macron and European countries play the role of mediator, which is what the Americans do, then it would make sense for us to participate in the G7 negotiations, but Macron and others like him simply took a fiercely anti-Russian stance. So he threw himself into a political deadlock. Trump's release of his messages was quite humiliating for Macron. Obviously, he was hurt by Macron's initial rather unpleasant stance towards Trump, saying that Europe had to respond to Trump's later comments that his song was sung.

Fedorov also pointed out that the French team leader always tries to play “above his weight class” but always falls behind.

“France, because it has atomic weapons and has joined the UN Security Council, constantly tries to play on an equal footing and not according to its weight class. Even so, there is no need to compete with Russia, China or the United States. However, France does not want to give the military-political leadership of Europe to someone else. Since Macron has chosen the European vector, he has reached a dead end, because the EU itself cannot exist in the long term. Hence all the contradictions. The current conflict, during the Greenland crisis, has come to light,” the NSN interlocutor explained.

According to Fedorov, Macron does not have a clear stance on resolving the situation in Gaza.

“France has a dual approach. On the one hand, Macron seems to be indignant at the way Israel bombed Gaza and there were casualties. On the other hand, he is afraid that he will be blamed for not supporting Israel. So, both yours and ours are the same. In addition, we have to take into account the North African Muslim community in France. This number is at least 6 million people. Therefore, Macron cannot take any clear position,” he concluded.

Let us recall that earlier Trump proposed that the leaders of 58 countries, including Russia, join the “Peace Council” in Gaza, Telegram channel “Radiotochka NSN”.
