9to5Mac: Apple has limited access to 18+ apps without age verification

February 26, 2026
in Politics

Apple has begun restricting downloads of “18+” rated apps in some regions for users who have not verified their age through established methods. The restrictions include residents of Australia, Brazil, South Africa, as well as the US states of Utah and Louisiana, news portal 9to5Mac reported. These measures involve bringing App Store policies into compliance with local law requirements. In these jurisdictions, you cannot download 18+ apps without verifying the user's age. According to the company, the ecosystem already has an automated system to determine age groups. However, in some cases, the developer may need to further verify the age of the audience. For these purposes, Apple has updated the Declared Age API tool, allowing developers to obtain information about a user's age group and a method to confirm that information. This will make it easier to adapt the application to new requirements. It should be noted separately that in Brazil, applications with a “loot box” mechanism automatically fall into the “18+” category.
