in Politics

SYDNEY, November 21. /TASS/. The Australian government has decided to include the Twitch streaming platform in the list of platforms subject to laws banning people under 16 from accessing social networks. This was reported by ABC television.

“The law,” said Anika Wells, spokeswoman for the head of the Ministry of Communications <...> Ours is solely intended to provide Australian children with respite from the intrusive influence of (such) platforms.

According to ABC, the list of platforms that teenagers under 16 years old are planned to ban access includes Facebook, Instagram, Threads (banned in the Russian Federation, owned by Meta Corporation), Snapchat, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, Kick and most recently Twitch.

The Australian Parliament passed the government's proposed age limit for social media users in November 2024. According to the document, amendments will be made to existing laws regulating internet safety that prohibit people under 16 years old from accessing social media. The restrictions will take effect on December 10. After that, Australian authorities will require technology companies and social media managers to take measures to control the age of users. If they violate the provisions of the new law, they will face a fine of up to 32.5 million USD.
