Scientists in Greece have discovered an underground freshwater lake under the Mediterranean Bay that is 800 thousand years old. AMNA agency reports this.

Scientists from Malta and Italy have discovered that a significant drop in sea levels during the ice age contributed to rain and river water entering underwater sediments, some of which persists to this day. According to research, the lake is located at a depth of 20 to 600–700 meters below the seabed of the Gulf of Corinth.
The researchers used an interdisciplinary approach, combining high-quality seismic data with hydrogeological modeling to study the distribution of water on the seafloor. This set of methods helps identify areas where water can accumulate and its movement over time.
According to AMNA, Greece, like many countries in the Mediterranean, is facing increasing pressure on its water resources, so mapping where groundwater occurs and understanding how to preserve geological structures can help the state better understand the state of the ground.
In May, National Science Magazine wrote that an international team of scientists from China, Australia and Italy found evidence of a massive underground aquifer on Mars, located 5-8 km below the Martian surface. The discovery was made possible by data from NASA's InSight seismic mission, which recorded meteorite impacts in 2021 and a strong earthquake in 2022.
