
The 47th Türkiye İş Bankası Istanbul Marathon, organized by Spor İstanbul with the slogan “The only transcontinental Marathon in the world”, will take place tomorrow at 09:00.
According to the criteria set by the World Athletics Association, a total of 41 thousand 416 people from 126 countries registered to participate in this organization, one of three Yellow Label marathons in Europe, including 5 thousand 976 at the distance of 42 km, 12 thousand 440 at the distance of 15.5 km, 18 thousand in the Corporate Run and 5 thousand in the Public Run. 43 elite athletes from 4 different continents will participate in the marathon. In addition to the eventual champion Dejene Debela, Rhonzas Lokitam Kilimo and Denis Chirchir in the men's race, along with Sofia Assefa, Tigst Getnet and Yenenesh Tilahun Dinkesa in the women's race, are the names that will participate in the race. In the marathon, where local athletes will run with the goal of winning the national championship, the athletes who finish first in the men's and women's events will be awarded the title of “Turkish champion”. Masters athletes aged 40 and over who participate in the organization and obtain the required qualifications will have the right to participate in the 2027 World Masters Marathon Championships as well as the 2026 World Masters Marathon Championships. The race will be broadcast live on the IBB Sports Istanbul YouTube channel.
MARATHON ROUTE
The starting point of the 47th Istanbul Marathon will be the entrance to the Anatolian side of the Martyrs' Bridge on July 15. The marathon will start with a wheelchair race at 08:45 and the 42 km race will be held at 09:00. They will run a distance of 42 km. They will descend to Beşiktaş from the entrance of the July 15 Martyrs' Bridge on the Anatolian Side and walk along the coast to Galata Bridge. After crossing the bridge, runners will turn towards Sirkeci and enter the coastal road via Kennedy Street. They will pass through Sirkeci, Cankurtaran, Kumkapı, Yenikapı, Yedikule, Zeytinburnu and Bakırköy, follow Rauf Orbay Street and continue until the Air Force Academy vehicle evacuation gate. Participants will turn around here and follow the coastal road again to reach Gülhane Park. The race through the park will follow the tram route and end at Sultanahmet Square. The 15.5 km race will be started in three separate groups, starting at 09.19, 09.38 and 10.05. In this category, athletes will continue to follow the same route as the 42 km race until Yenikapı and the finish line will be held in Yenikapı. Next, the Corporate Race category will start at 10.32, 11.06 and 11.40, the Public Race will start at 12.14. Competitors in these categories will start running from the Anatolian Side entrance of the July 15 Martyrs' Bridge, follow Barbaros Avenue, go down to the beach and complete the race on the road between Tüpraş Stadium and Dolmabahçe Palace. Those without a bib number will not be allowed to participate in the marathon.
AWARDS ANNOUNCED
Male and female athletes finishing the 47th Istanbul Marathon will receive the same amount of prize money. A total of 190 thousand dollars will be awarded for the 42 km category. If you break the record, you will be rewarded with 5 thousand dollars. In the organization, the first place will get 50 thousand dollars, the second place will get 20 thousand dollars, the third place will get 10 thousand dollars, the fourth place will get 5 thousand dollars, the fifth place will get 4 thousand dollars, the sixth place will get 3 thousand dollars, the seventh place will get 2 thousand dollars and the eighth place will get one thousand dollars. There will also be separate prize money allocation for local athletes. The total prize money of 400 thousand lira will be divided among the top 5 Turkish male and female athletes. Among the top five athletes in both men and women, first place will be awarded 60 thousand lira, second place 50 thousand lira, third place 40 thousand lira, fourth place 30 thousand lira and fifth place 20 thousand lira. The top four athletes in the wheelchair category in the marathon will receive prize money of 30 thousand, 25 thousand, 20 thousand and 15 thousand lira respectively. Cash prizes will also be awarded to winners in the age groups 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and over 85 years old. Considering all categories, a total of 9.5 million lira in prize money will be distributed within the organization.
