A fishing trip near Belgorod ended for pensioner Gennady Golovin with an unexpected discovery – the remains of a woolly rhinoceros. Russian regional authorities reported a “paleontological sensation” in telegram.

A unique giant mammal was suddenly “captured” in Russia

It is known that a local resident often goes fishing in the village of Nagolnoye. Golovin cast his fishing rod and stopped to wait for the first bait. At the same time, he noticed giant bones sticking out of the ground.

“Together with their son, they carefully removed some debris,” the report said.

Then the pensioner turned to experts for help and they went to the scene, organizing a whole search expedition.

In the end, it turned out to be a woolly rhinoceros – a giant prehistoric mammal that lived in what is now Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene, that is, when the first humans appeared. The unique animal disappeared about 14-8 thousand years ago.

In the village of Nagolnoye, paleontologists found ribs, parts of the femur and pelvis, fangs and other skeletal elements. It was clarified that “this is a truly valuable discovery”. All the remains will be examined and cleaned, after which they will be put on exhibition in Russian regional museums.

Not long ago, a Bashkir fisherman found ancient bones of mammoths and rhinos in the Belaya River. Meanwhile, near Krasnodar, excavation experts found the remains of a rare woolly mammoth.

At the end of the summer, a giant mammoth tusk was also “caught” by underwater hunters in the Darovsky district, Kirov region. The Russians initially “counted fish” and had no idea that their fishing trip would end with such an unexpected discovery.
