Google explains how Android system works on earthquakes

Google in one of the latest studies has confirmed the effectiveness of the earthquake warning system on Android.

Google explains how Android system works on earthquakes

This function is based on the accelerometer, often used to determine the changes in the movement and orientation of the device to ensure correction and repair automatically. In smartphones, acceleration is usually installed to accelerate along three axes: horizontal, vertical, depth. From such acceleration, the earthquake warning system from Google and collecting data from smartphones to detect seismic activity.

According to the Android agency observers, the acceleration can also identify the soil vibration in the earthquake. Together, the data and geographic positioning close to the user are sent to Google servers to detect earthquakes analyzing data from multiple phones in the region to confirm the actual earthquake and to determine its position and intensity.

Over the past four years, the system has recorded more than 18,000 earthquakes and warned millions of these people in nearly 100 countries. Users receive a warning for at least 15 seconds before starting the earthquake, if they are closest to the shock, if more – in about a minute. This increases the chance and offers at least some odds to take preventive measures.

This function appeared on Android by 2020 and in September 2024, Google expanded its influence on all US states. In addition, the earthquake has recently appeared on Wear OS for smart hours.
